Lakewood
Lakewood Washington, located in Pierce County is one of the largest suburbs in the Tacoma Metro aera. Lakewood was originally called the Prairie, an expanse of land 20 miles square. The Steilacoom and Nisqually Indians held their pow-wows on the prairie before the advent of the white hunters, trappers and settlers. Historic Fort Steilacoom opened in 1849 to establish an American military presence in Puget Sound to protect the settlers.
Today you can find numerous open spaces, trails for a hiking, biking and even the 340 acre Steilacoom Park for all kinds of recreation. If museums are your cup to tea, there's the Lakewood History Museum and the Fort Lewis Military Museum to name a few. Be sure not to miss the Thornewood Castle which is also a Bed and Breakfast site and the Lakewood Gardens.
